On 24 and 25 September 2019 at the Università degli Studi Internazionali di Roma – UNINT (Via delle Sette Chiese, 139, 00147), the UNIMED, Union of the Universities of the Mediterranean, has organized an international conference entitled ” A step further towards vulnerable communities in Middle East: The commitment of universities to the refugee crisis in the Middle East.”

The conference is part of the European RESCUE project, Support for the education of refugees in Mena Countries, and will see the participation of academics and experts from Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq as well as the interests of European international and academic organizations dealing with the issue. For the programme please have a look at this link.

Al Fanar Media is participating in the event as Media Partner and its editor, David Wheeler will moderate the opening session.

The aim of the conference is to ensure a structured comparison between the various actors involved in the issue of refugees and education, to observe experiences from different sectors and to promote a multidisciplinary approach that allows to draw a concrete action plan that favors access to higher education.

To date only 1% of refugees in the world have access to university education.

The commitment of UNIMED and its associates, as well as of RESCUE partners and all those involved in the conference, is to imagine concrete and sustainable common projects. The conference will focus on “what’s next?”, considering that the refugee crisis is an urgent and dramatically evolving issue. Syria, Yemen, Iraq, are just some of the scenarios in the region that exhibit factors of instability that hit hard in the surrounding countries and also affect the European reality.
